Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Pursuit of adventure does not come without a cost. Significant sacrific has been made to make our journey a reality. Adam needed to leave his job, his 35" television, his Subaru WRX, and his healthy relationship with Beer, (Oh, and his mom, can't forget mom). Ingrid needed to part with something even more dear......

Allow me to introduce Ingrid Arulaid Echter "Sport" edition, with her new sleek aerodynamic quoif. This was a MAJOR milestone for Mrs. Echter as this is the shortest her hair has been since she was 3! Congratulations to Ingrid for having the courage to make such a significant change.

More to come later, Internet Cafe closing.

We ought to be in Papers!

So what a surprising start to our adventure, Ingrid and I returned to Estonia to discover we'd made the center page of the Tallinn paper!

Apparently there was a report on the tremendous weddings in Estonia this summer (an indication of their thriving economy) and spread across the center of the middle pages was this shot of Ingrid and I on the streets of Tallinn. This was part of the "playing in traffic" shoot we did on the Sunday after our wedding. Ingrid and I literally roamed the streets of Tallinn stopping traffic, it was quite a site.

For those avid Estonian readers logging onto this site, the full story can be located at

To locate the shot of us, simply click on the image of the couple walking along the waterfront.

Travel Preparation

Since there's not much gear, there's not much planning right?

Although we've yet to set foot outside America, the adventure has already begun. Preparations for this adventure have ranged from gear and travel plans, to vaccinations and emergency medical evacuation contingencies.

Here are the planning highlights to help illustrate the upfront effort that has gone into this adventure.

The photo above shows all the gear Ingrid and I will be carrying for the next year. Innovations in materials have allowed us to reduce the weight of or packs to 26lbs. for Ingrid and 33lbs. for Adam - Now don't go thinking Adam packs heavier than Ingrid or has brought gratuitous footwear, He's packing the shared Items such as the tent, towel, and water purification system. We expect this weight to be reduced as we find certain items unneccessary and opt to leave them behind (Do we really need 3 pairs of socks and underwear?) and as Adam finishes and trades away all 1038 pages of Don Quixote!

After gear, visas have been another major concern of this trip. While Adam can travel to 23 of the 30 countries without needing a visa, Ingrid, due to her Estonian nationality, requires 20+ visas for the same journey. We have spent hundreds of dollars and made several trips to New York City and Washington D.C. in our quest for Visa's. In hindsight, we'd have taken the middle east more seriously, those people do not mess around with visa requests.

The last major preparation to mention in this entry is vaccinations. To ensure we'd make it back without a serious disease for a souvenir, Ingrid and Adam took more shots in the arm than Barry Bonds. The Map below demonstrates some of the signifiant diseases we'll encounter on our trip and the vaccinations that were required. At this point I feel confident I can survive falling on a rusty nail in stagnant water while being attacked by a rabid wombat then receiving resuscitation from a toothless local whose fingers are falling off.

Route map and original plans

So this is our "Wild and Crazy" route around the world. Our goal is to stick to developing nations while we interact with locals from numerous ethnic groups, engaging in their culture and daily life in an attempt to gain an appreciation for the way in which the majority of the world lives.

We don't expect this route to be easy or smooth, but we're hoping to visit the places most people only dream about and experience humanity in its most vulnerable state.

Please join us as we embark on this epic adventure. We look forward to sharing our trials and tribulations along the way.
